Using woollen Nappy covers - For best results

Image
Using woollen nappy covers can be easy, once you’ve got the hang of it. They are a completely natural and breathable choice which makes them ideal for your baby. Find out more about getting the best results with wool. Why choose wool Wool has lots of advantages over man-made fabrics. Soft and comfortable it helps to regulate your babies temperature, stopping them from getting too hot or too cold the way that a plastic-coated cover might. It’s also a natural and sustainable fibre. Our nappy covers are made here in New Zealand using 100% New Zealand merino wool. So you know that you are using a completely kiwi product. Unlike other nappy covers, these woollen covers do not work by having a waterproof layer that contains the liquid. Instead, they actually absorb some of the moisture and then allow it to evaporate. In order to get the best results, then the covers need treating with lanolin regularly. This helps them to deal with the wetness and to reduce odour. This is relati...

Cloth nappies for bigger children

Image
Cloth nappies for bigger children can be difficult to find. Once your little one has outgrown the basic OSFM nappies, what should you do? Many children can be wet, particularly at night, until they are well past this size. At Nappyneedz we have a couple of options you may like to consider. Finding a larger reusable nappy Although there are some larger products on the market, as a rule, the selection of bigger nappies is not huge. This shouldn’t mean that your child has to stop using cloth. Over recent months we have been developing a number of options that allow you to keep using reusables. Currently, we have two larger options that might work for your little one. But we also have plans for another washable nappy that will fit an even bigger size range. Pre-fold nappies If you use pre-fold nappies or like the simplicity of the Ecobots system, then you might be interested in our XL covers . These are the same as our standard nappy covers, with all the same great features. They are ...

Choosing a night nappy

Image
Choosing a night nappy is something that I often get asked about. When it comes to cloth at night, it can be difficult to find the combination that works just right for you. I thought that I’d share some advice that I gave to a mother recently. Cloth night nappies A lot of people are put off the idea of using cloth over night because of how bulky the nappies look. Although they do look quite large, usually babies and young children don’t actually find them that uncomfortable. If you are looking for a trimmer nappy, then using something like bamboo or hemp can help. These fabrics are highly absorbent, but slimmer than other nappy fabrics. Hemp in particular is ideal for night time as it is very very absorbent. Most people find that it will take around ten washes to get to full absorbency. You can still use the insert during this period, but it will continue to get better and hold more over this time. The only thing to watch with hemp is that it is fully dry before each use. W...

Night nappies for a good night's sleep

Image
Getting a good night’s sleep can be a real challenge when you have small children. If your baby or toddler doesn’t have a night nappy that goes the distance, then it can be even harder. Here are a few night nappy tips to help your little one sleep all night. Night nappy tips A dedicated night nappy isn’t necessary. You can need to use extra boosting in your ordinary cloth nappies. Choosing a larger size nappy or cover than you would use in the day time, means that you can add extra absorbency. Don’t worry about too much padding, it will still be comfortable for your little one. Wool makes a great night nappy cover. Wool maintains body temperature, which stops a wet nappy feeling cold against the skin. If you feed your baby in the night, only change if they have pooed. A wet nappy is fine. A washable liner can help a wet nappy feel less damp against the skin. Hemp and bamboo work really well at night for extra absorbency. Rinse night nappy inserts in cold water as...

Helpful hemp hints

Image
Hemp has long been one of my favourite fabrics to use in cloth nappies, but it can be a bit tricky to get it right, so here are our helpful hemp hints, to help you get the most out of your hemp nappy inserts. When to use hemp We’ll start our hemp hints with when to use hemp:  Hemp is super absorbent, and so it makes a fantastic insert for night nappies.  You can of course use it during the day, but as it is hard to dry, I tend to only use it for night times.  We currently use hemp boosters in our night time version of the dinky nappy , because they add a great level of absorbency to the nappy, without being too bulky.  Hemp is often compared to bamboo in terms of absorbency, and while some people say that they haven’t noticed any difference, I certainly find hep the more absorbent of the two.  You can get whole nappies made out of hemp too, although the length of time that they take to dry, and the fact that they can get a little stiff, has always put me off fitted hemp napp...

Woollen nappy covers

Image
When it comes to night nappies, woollen covers have always been one of my favourite options. They are also great during the day, and if you are looking to use a totally natural cloth nappy system, then woollen nappy covers are the ideal choice.  So, here is a bit more information about woollen nappy covers and how to use them. Shop now How woollen nappy covers work Woollen nappy covers are a little different to most other nappy covers on the market, this is because they do not act as a waterproof layer.  Instead, wool actually absorbs quite a lot of water, it can absorb up to 32% of it’s own body weight in water.  This is actually more than cotton will hold, which absorbs around 25% of it’s weight in water.  You may think that this would actually make it perfect to make a cloth nappy out of, but here is where the big difference is.  Most cloth nappy fabrics, such as cotton, hemp and bamboo can be totally dried out, wool on the other hand absorbs mois...

Night nappy tips and tricks

Image
Finding the right cloth nappy to use at night can sometimes seem like a bit of a challenge.  A night nappy needs to be absorbent enough to last a whole night long without changing and still being comfortable for your little one.  After successfully using cloth nappies day and night on all four of my children, I thought I’d share some of my top night nappy tips and tricks. What a night nappy needs Ideally when looking for a good cloth night nappy, you are looking for something that will last all night long.  This may well change as your baby gets older.  A newborn baby will not need such an absorbent night nappy, as they will probably need changing at each feed.  As your little one gets older, you will only need to change them in the night if they poo, so the night nappy you choose will need to be absorbent enough to last all night. Extra boosting your day nappies is fine for some babies and children, don’t worry if you find that they are very bulky.  A large night nappy shou...
