Trying out a menstrual cup

Thinking about trying out a menstrual cup? I recently gave some women the chance to ‘test drive’ one of our menstrual cups. Here is how one woman, who was new to menstrual cups found the experience.

Trying out a menstrual cup

Positives

– No tampon strings

– No worrying about defecating on tampon strings and contamination

– No wet tampon string after showering

– Feel cleaner

– No accidental double tampon episodes (this has happened to me before when I was feeling sick and I added another tampon without removing the old one and when I went to change it again I pulled two out – GROSS!)

– So much better for the environment

– Can go longer between changing

– Great during exercise and sleeping. Can not feel it at all.

– No heavy slipping feel like you do when a tampon needs changing

Negatives

– A bit messier to insert and remove

– A bit tricky if hand basin is not close to the toilet. I had to wrap in toilet paper and then carry to the basin with my knickers down as my hands had blood on (so I didn’t want to pull my knickers up and get them dirty) so I carried to the basin, washed hands and cup and then sat back down to insert.

– Obviously very awkward if you don’t have the wipes and need to change while out and about. Often malls don’t have basins in with the cubicles and there is no way you’d want to carry it out in front of others. So you’d need to have changed it before you go out, carry wipes or use a disabled toilet with the basin in the cubicle.

– Not the best instructions. There were no pictures of how it looks fully extended and I realised just before folding/inserting that I hadn’t pulled it out enough. Also no picture of how to squeeze/fold. I looked on the internet to see other instructions. So maybe better instructions with the whole cup extended and then a picture of folded ready for inserting to help.

I think if you are a bit frightened by seeing blood or aren’t that comfortable with your body then the cup might not be for you. Personally I’m all good with both those so I found the cup really great. Have already recommended it to a few people and sent them your way.

This woman tried our collapsible cup. You can find it and the rest of our menstrual cup range here.
