Using washable wipes

Are you planning on using washable wipes? What do you need to think about before you decide to use them?

Why use cloth wipes?

If you’re already using cloth nappies, then going for a reusable wipe is a great idea. Not only are you avoiding chemicals, but you are also cutting down on waste. Washable wipes are cheaper, healthier and simple to use. When you’re already washing nappies, popping a couple of wipes into the machine with the load doesn’t make any difference. Many babies react to the chemicals in disposable wipes, so using a reusable wipe means that you’ll avoid these problems.

Using washable wipes

  • A little bit of water is more than enough to use with washable wipes.
  • If you want to keep wipes ready for use, you can store them in a lidded plastic box.
  • Some people like to add a few drops of essential oil to the water for wipes.
  • Change the water that your wipes are in every two to three days.
  • Wash the wipes along with your cloth nappies
  • You will probably only need around two wipes for each change.
  • You don’t need to wait for the wipes to dry before using them again.
  • To get started you will need around twelve wipes.
  • When out and about, keep them dry and then wet as needed.
  • Alternatively store them in a mini wetbag, wet, ready for use.

Getting started

Are washable wipes for you? There’s not much you need to get started. You will only need between six and twelve wipes to begin with, depending on how often you wash. Any plastic tub will work fine as a storage container. To avoid spills, choose a box with a lid that snaps shut. A sandwich box would be fie for this. Just use water on the wipes to begin with, it will be more than enough to clean your baby.
