The life of a pretty nappy

Image
The great things about cloth nappies, particularly if it is a pretty nappy, is that they can go on many bottoms, be owned by many people and be loved by many different people. If you’ve ever browsed the buy and sell pages on facebook or trademe, then you might have seen lots of one of a kind nappies for sale. Why buys them? What happens to them, what happens in the life of a pretty nappy? Creating a pretty nappy These days, I don’t very often get the chance to get all creative and make something special and one of a kind. But in the past I’ve made quite a few of these one off nappies. A pretty nappy is usually so called, as it has something about it that makes it a bit different and more attractive than your run of the mill, every day nappies, which are usually known as work horse nappies. A couple of years ago, I made the snowman nappy that you can see above. After it had been sold and found it’s way to it’s new owner, I thought no more about it, until a c...

Old fashioned cloth nappies

Image
Every time I’ve done a market or baby show, I always get some older women coming up to me to talk about our cloth nappies. Sometimes they just want to see how they’ve changed from the ones that they used to use, sometimes they are surprised that people still use cloth nappies, but nearly every single one of them talks about how great their old fashioned cloth nappies were, and how you can’t get them any more. Often they’re surprised to hear that I think they’re great too, and that you can still get flat cotton nappies, very similar to the ones that they used to use. Old fashioned cloth nappies Our Grand parents and parents used cloth nappies that were quite different to the ones that you might have come across today. Old fashioned cloth nappies weren’t made of modern fabrics, they weren’t shaped, they weren’t made in a range of bright colours and prints. Made just of cotton and in flat squares that had to be folded and then pinned, before ...

How many newborn nappies do I need?

Image
Something that I get asked a lot by parents to be, is how many newborn nappies do I need? Knowing how many nappies you will need for those early days is sometimes difficult to decide. Here’s our quick guide to working out how many nappies you will need. How many newborn nappies do I need? To work out how many nappies you might need, you might want to think about the following: How often are you planning to wash? You will probably need around 6-10 nappies a day: If you are washing every other day then you will need at least 12 newborn nappies. If you wash every day then you will need 6-8 nappies. What time of year is it? If it’s winter, then you might find that it takes longer for them to dry. Think about the type of drying you can do. If it’s going to take a while to get them dry, then you might need 6 or so more that you’d other wise need. Are you using just in the day time? If you aren’t using them at night, then you will probably need one or two less nap...

Cloth Maternity Pads

Image
Cloth maternity pads were something that I really didn’t consider when I was pregnant with my first baby. Actually, if I’m honest, despite having used a menstrual cup for years beforehand, and although I was planning on using cloth nappies, I fell for listening to all the crazy things that they tell you that you need, and even went for disposable knickers! (Bad idea, don’t do it.) But by the time my second baby came along, I decided to give cloth maternity pads a go, and I’m so glad I did. Why cloth maternity pads? So, what’s so great about cloth maternity pads? Why would you want to use them? After giving birth, your lady bits can be so tender, what would you prefer against them? Rough paper and plastic of disposable pads or nice soft cloth? Believe me, there’s no comparison, that soft fabric is so much nicer against your poor battered bits. The other huge advantage is that because you’re going to have to wear maternity pads for a good few week...

Why everyone needs flat nappies

Image
When I first started using cloth nappies on my babies, over nine years ago, I started out using flat cloth nappies. Over time I went on to try all sorts of different cloth nappies, but I’ve always gone back to and loved those flat cloth nappies. In fact, even though my four children are now long past the nappy phase, I still have, and use those flat nappies. Which is one of the reasons why everyone needs flat nappies. Why everyone needs flat nappies When you talk about cloth nappies, people are often put off by the idea of having to fold, old fashioned cloth nappies, but of course, most modern cloth nappies aren’t like that. Our pre-folds , for example are really easy to use, and don’t need complicated folding. Yet here I am explaining why everyone needs flat nappies. Why? Flat nappies aren’t actually that hard to fold You can just pad fold them One nappy will fit any size of baby They dry quickly They have lots of other uses, other than as a nappy Using flat nap...

Great value cloth nappies

Image
Nobody wants to spend a small fortune on cloth nappies, but neither do you want to buy something cheap that just doesn’t work. What you really need is great value cloth nappies, ones that are a great price, but also still work really well. But what should you be looking for to fit both of these criteria? Cheap nappies? There are lots of cheap nappies on the market, but are they great value cloth nappies? Are they actually going to work well and do the job for you? One of the questions that you might ask, is why are they so cheap? Many of these low cost cloth nappies are one size fits most pocket nappies with a range of snaps on the front. Often also known as China cheapies, they come in a range of patterns and prints, but are all very similar in style. Some people love this type of cloth nappy and get on really well with them, but there are some reasons why they might not be the nappy for you. First of all, they are not always made with very good quality fabrics, so they might not...
