Best time to start cloth nappies

When is the best time to start cloth nappies? Is a question that I am often asked. It’s fair to say that there is no hard or fast rule about the best time to start using cloth. There are some things to consider to help you decide when the time is right for you and your baby.

Newborn cloth

Many people start using cloth nappies from the moment that their baby is born. There are quite a few advantages to this. It’s much easier to see how much and how often a baby is weeing and pooing in a cloth nappy. Another advantage is that cloth nappies are also less likely to cause irritation and rashes as there are no chemicals. If you decide to go for a cotton nappy, such as our prefolds then this really helps to protect delicate newborn skin. As every new parent knows, tiny babies need changing often. Cloth nappies are ideal for this, as you can always have some on hand and don’t need to rush to the nearest shop late at night when you suddenly run out.

Cloth nappies are such a great choice for newborn babies that some hospitals even use them. My youngest two children who were born at Dunedin Hospital were both in flat cotton nappies in the hospital from the moment that they were born.

Settling into baby life

For some parents, although they can see the advantages of cloth from newborn it isn’t the best choice for them. Having a new baby can bring a lot of disruption to your life. Breastfeeding, sleepless nights, recovering from birth and just having a new tiny person that relies upon you for everything can take some time to get used to. Many parents don’t want to add any extra stress to this mix. Newborn meconium can stain quite badly too. For these reasons, some parents decide to wait until after the initial first few months are over before giving cloth a go.

There is not really a best time to start cloth nappies, just the best time for you, your family and your baby. It’s never too late to give cloth a go if your little one is still in nappies. Some parents even make the switch just before potty training. Sometimes the change to cloth can be what triggers your toddler to understand the idea of being wet and using the toilet.
