How do OSFM nappies work?

The basic idea behind a OSFM cloth nappy is simple. The nappy can be adjusted to make it small enough to fit a tiny baby and then it can be let out to fit an older child. There are a number of ways that this can be achieved, but one of the most popular is rise snaps. These are the snaps that you can see on the front of this type of nappy. The idea is that by snapping them closed, it reduces the rise of the nappy. The rise is the distance from the front waistband to the rear, passing between the legs. This does make a much smaller nappy or outer, but as it can sometimes still be bulky across the back, our dinky nappies also feature snaps at the rear to make a much smaller fit.

Do they fit all children?

When I first started using cloth on my oldest child, rather than being advertised as fitting most, this type of nappy tended to be called one size fits all. The problem with this of course is that there is nothing that fits every single baby. Many parents find that the nappies can be very bulky in the early days and are too large entirely for newborns. For those who have toddlers who remain in nappies a little bit longer, particularly at night, then again they may outgrow this type of nappy before they are ready to stop using them. Having said that, most babies will get on fine with a one size nappy for the whole time that they are in cloth. It’s a great way to save money by not having to keep buying different sizes as your baby grows.

What other options are there?

https://www.nappyneedz.co.nz/cloth-nappies-for-premature-babies/Sized nappies are the other choice when it comes to cloth. With this type of nappy, you need to buy different sizes for your baby as they grow. This type of nappy does give a much better fit as each one is designed to fit a specific size. I personally prefer this type of nappy for newborn babies. Our Ecobots nappies, in particular, are fantastic for tiny babies and we even offer tiny premature sizes in this type of nappy.
